The singer Lizzie Jones was among those awarded the MBE in the New Year’s Honours for her inspirational work in improving the safety for rugby league players following the sudden death of her husband.

Danny Jones, a Wales international who had also played previously for Halifax, died after suffering a heart attack during a match for Keighley Cougars against London Skolars in May 2015. He was later found to have suffered from cardiomyopathy, an inherited condition that leads to the thickening of the cardiac muscles, and which can be diagnosed through screening.
