Saracens chairman Nigel Wray – whose investments with players saw the club break the Premiership salary cap – has retired with immediate effect.

The 71-year-old multi-millionaire owner has been embattled since Saracens were forced to pay a £5.36million fine and were deducted 35 league points two months ago for indiscretions over the last three seasons.
