For 77 minutes it had simmered, then finally this grudge match at Sandy Park erupted – with a mass brawl on the touchline leading to a red card for Harry Williams.
Exeter’s England prop had already been replaced, but when tensions between these now-bitter rivals boiled over, he couldn’t resist getting involved. The Chiefs tighthead hurled himself into the middle of the melee and when he was ushered away, he had a heated verbal exchange with Test team-mate Mako Vunipola.
Once the warring factions had been pulled apart and the captains had been lectured, referee Wayne Barnes called Williams over and sent him off – although he was already off. He had been sin-binned for a ruck offence earlier in the second half, which meant that a player who had not previously been shown a card in his professional career completed the disciplinary set in the space of one game.
