Gary Lineker was “evicted” from this weekend’s edition of Match of the Day – as he was on his way to present Sports Personality of the Year.

Regular host of the BBC Premier League highlight programme Lineker was a conspicuous by his absence, with viewers tuning in to see Dan Walker at the helm.

Lineker has been the headline presenter of Match of the Day since 1999, when he took over from Des Lynam.

And he explained his absence on Twitter – which also meant missing his beloved Leicester’s draw with Norwich.

Lineker tweeted on Saturday afternoon: “First  @LCFC  game I’ve not watched in years as travelling to Aberdeen for  @BBCSPOTY  and now reading on here that it’s now been given as an own goal.”
