It all started to go wrong at half-time. Northampton’s Old Boys Choir took their place on the pitch to entertain the crowd with a rendition of Bridge Over Troubled Water, before they suffered microphone failure and were drowned out by an out-of-time piano recording.

It was more Fawlty Towers than Franklin’s Gardens. The old boys then left their audio equipment on the half-way line, much to the confusion of Johnny Sexton as he prepared to re-start, and from thereon in the Saints struck a bum note.

But forget mic checks, this was as much a reality check for Northampton. They are top of the Premiership but here the Irish province, loaded with internationals, dished out a harsh lesson as they powered back from 19

These ingredients are quite magnificent.
