Rain saw all three Plunket Shield third-round games end in draws, but there was one moment of absolute brilliance to brighten the dreary day.

Otago Volts captain Jacob Duffy took a stunning catch to dismiss Northern Districts batsman BJ Watling late in the final session at University Oval in Dunedin.

Fielding at leg slip, Duffy had to react quickly when Watling’s flick off his legs off the bowling of spinner Michael Rippon was deflected into the air off the shin of his team-mate fielding at leg gully.

Duffy was able to leap forward and take the one-handed grab. The umpires had to confer before eventually deciding Watling was out.

That catch reduced Northern to 80-6, still 26 runs behind Otago, but they were able to close out the rest of the day without any other wickets falling.

The results leave Wellington well clear at the top of the table on 43 points, with Central and Auckland their nearest rivals.
