At this time last year, the West Bridgewater football team watched Pope John end its season and face St. Bernard’s for the Div. 8 Super Bowl. Now, it’s West Bridgewater’s turn.
The Wildcats (12-0) head to Gillette Stadium on Friday for a 5 p.m. date with the defending champion Saints (8-4). West Bridgewater first-year head coach Justin Kogler, who coached Old Rochester to the Div. 6 Super Bowl last year, says his guys are prepared.
“If we take care of what we’re supposed to do, we have a shot,” he said. “West Bridgewater, last year, they were one game away (from the Super Bowl). They have just as much experience (as St. Bernard’s). If anything, there’s extra pressure on them to repeat.”
Behind a strong defensive line and linebacker corps, West Bridgewater’s defense has soared to force seven shutouts and allow a mere 62 points through 12 games.
Jack DeLuca, Ben Smith and Devin Georgantas were just a few on a long list of players St. Bernard’s head coach Tom Bingham marked as guys to worry about on a deep defensive unit. The Saints plan to just play their brand of football, yet Bingham recognizes the task at hand.
