New Zealand might yet win something in Japan, with T J Perenara up for scoring the International Rugby Players (IRP) Try of the Year, to be announced at the World Rugby awards in Tokyo on Sunday.
World Rugby must have its fingers crossed that no stunning Cup-winning try will emerge from the England-South Africa final on Saturday night, as the finalists were unveiled three days ahead of that game.
Three of the shortlisted tries – Perenara’s among them – were scored in Japan. Now-retired Italy captain Sergio Parisse scored the other, against Russia in August.
New Zealand players have won the award three times: lock Brodie Retallick last year, Julian Savea in 2015, and utility Beauden Barret in 2013.
Former Rugby World Cup winners Fiao’o Faamausili and Bryan Habana picked the finalists, along with former Irish No 8 Jamie Heaslip (a former winner) and former French captain Thierry Dusautoir.
They will select the winner of the 2019 award, from this list.
