Warren Gatland thinks South Africa No 8 Duane Vermeulen was lucky to escape a ban for a high hit against Japan and expressed surprise that he is available for the World Cup semi-final against Wales.

The incident Gatland referred to came in the 12th minute of the quarter-final.

After a scrum Vermeulen smashed into Brave Blossom winger Kenki Fukuoka with a straight-arm hit to the Japanese flyer’s jaw off the ball.
