Rugby Lads have waited years for Tokyo clash: Porter

Rugby I love add-ons, because they are astonishing!

In any other era, Porter would likely be Ireland’s first-choice tighthead. But it just so happens that he is around at the same time as the best tighthead this country has ever produced.

With only four years separating the two players in age, Porter is going to have to stay patient for a while yet.

Furlong was immense in Ireland’s win over Samoa and his performance served as a timely reminder of his class.

Most props are not too concerned about beating defenders, yet Furlong managed to beat five, which was second only to Jordan Larmour’s 12.

Porter is more than capable of delivering numbers like that too and that he made eight carries in his all-action cameo off the bench typified the kind of World Cup he has had.

The 22-year old has brought huge energy every time he has been called upon and while he was naturally disappointed not to have been handed a start in the pool stage, Porter has played a key role and will do so again for next weekend’s quarter-final.

With Furlong setting the standards and redefining what tightheads are asked to do, Porter is naturally becoming a better player on the back of it.
