Referee Nigel Owens shows Argentina’s Tomas Lavanini a red card after a dangerous tackle.
Argentina’s Tomas Lavanini has been sent off against England for a horrible high tackle on England star Owen Farrell in their Pool C clash in Tokyo.
Lavanini hit Farrell directly on the head with his left shoulder, leaving referee Nigel Owens with no choice but to produce a red card after just 17 minutes with the score at 5-3 to England.
Lavanini has a poor disciplinary record but doesn’t seem to be capable or willing to change his ways, despite World Rugby’s crackdown on high tackles.
England’s Manu Tuilagi was then lucky to avoid a card after he hit Emiliano Boffelli in the air as the Argentina fullback claimed a high ball.
That was just dumb from Argentina. Nigel Owens had no choice but to wave the red card. There is clearly zero tolerance now for strikes to the head unless the player is dropping suddenly. That’s Argentina’s tournament ove
