England’s players will be warned to stick to the script against the USA on Thursday  and avoid using the low-risk fixture to pursue personal selection agendas ahead of bigger games to come.

Eddie Jones made 10 changes to his starting XV for the second of four Pool C matches, then outlined the dangers of anyone involved treating it as an audition before the encounters with Argentina and France.

He cited a cautionary tale from 12 years ago to reinforce the point that individual motivations must not be allowed to undermine the collective objective.
