Liam Williams can inspire Wales to Rugby World Cup glory, says Dragons legend Gareth Thomas.

Thomas is bullish about the chances of the nation he proudly represented in a century of Test matches.

And in Williams he sees a player with the x-factor to separate Wales from the rest when the going gets tough.

Thomas, known to all as Alfie, said: “What makes this World Cup unbelievably exciting for me is that we have a great team collectively but in Liam Williams we also have a modern day Shane Williams, morphed in with a bit of JPR.

“Liam has that ability to turn defence into attack, to produce that moment of magic to break an arm wrestle. To light the touch paper.”

Williams has been an ever-present figure in the Wales side

Wales have had their fair share of World Cup horror shows, losing at home to Samoa in1991 and to Fiji in 2007.

But they came back from the dead to beat England at Twickenham en route to the quarter-finals last time and have not looked back since.

A Grand Slam in the most recent Six Nations was followed by a 14th successive Test win to break the national record.

They even briefly knocked New Zealand off their perch, spending a fortnight as world rugby’s number one ranked nation.
