Former England captain Catherine Spencer has hit out at World Rugby’s decision to drop the word ‘Women’s’ from the Rugby World Cup in their decision to adopt gender neutral branding, claiming “women’s rugby could lose its identity”.

Speaking to the Daily Telegraph, Spencer, who captained England to the Women’s World Cup final in 2010, believes the gender neutral approach could strip away work that has been done in recent years to raise the visibility of the women’s game.

“We have been fighting for years to promote women’s rugby and to tell the world it is OK to be a woman and play rugby. By renaming the Women’s World Cup, I think we have lost that identity
