What is it?

England’s World Cup preparations are already fully up and running, with a win and a loss to Wales already under their belt. Saturday’s match at Twickenham is their penultimate warm-up fixture, with Italy to come on Friday 6 September at St James’ Park, Newcastle.

Ireland, however, are yet to get fully up and running. A relative second-string side dispatched Italy comfortably ten days ago, and since then Joe Schmidt’s squad have been at a warm-weather camp in the Algarve. They have back-to-back fixtures against Wales coming up, too, before the tournament kicks off properly on Friday 20 September.

What is the latest squad news?

Eddie Jones has decided to employ both Sam Underhill and Tom Curry on the same back-row which, while experimental, will provide England with mobility and some much needed breakdown expertise. Ford and Farrell will start together for the first time since the 2018 South Africa tour, while Manu Tuilagi will provide the ballast outside of them in a new-look midfield partnership for England.  There is good news, too, in the fact that Mako Vunipola will be fit to play a part in this weekend’s fixture, even if it’s from the bench.
