All Blacks management should have cited Rudolph Snyman for his hit on Brodie Retallick.

OPINION: Springbok Rudolph Gerhardus Snyman should be behind rugby’s bars for his harpooning of All Black Brodie Retallick on Saturday.

That he wasn’t cited for it shows either disdain for the rules by the All Blacks’ management or dereliction of their duty of care to their players.

Snyman was 117 kilograms of shaggy roast boer coming at torpedo speed to take out an unsuspecting Retallick at the back of a ruck.

It was clear to everyone, except monocled South Africans, that Snyman did not stampede through the virtual gate, unless the veld gate is as wide as a Limpopo barn door.

While referees whistle this dangerous offence at club and provincial level, test referees are permitting a free for all, as in everyone leaving their feet. Apparently they are trying to limit penalties.

The Boks frequently take out men off the ball, as do the French. On Saturday, Aaron Smith was decked a metre behind the ruck by Bok hooker Bongi Mbonambi a minute from fulltime. Had one of the visually impaired touch runners flagged it, the Springboks would not have scored their try to get their victorious draw.

It is astonishing that more jackals trying to snaffle turnovers haven’t been beheaded by Snyman missile types.
