New Zealand-born lock Will Skelton could be a shock inclusion in the Wallabies’ World Cup squad after coach Michael Cheika revealed he had not given up on coaxing the hulking second-rower home.
Cheika admitted it was “highly unlikely” officials could pull it off in time for England-based Skelton to be included in Australia’s squad of 31, which will be named this Friday.
But the Wallabies coach went to the trouble of naming him in a list of players he and selectors could choose from who haven’t played any Test rugby yet this year.
“[Jack] Dempsey, [Tom] Robertson, not sure even if Will Skelton is still on the table,” Cheika said on the squad’s return from Auckland on Sunday.

“We’ll have to look and see what the discussion is there over the next day or two before the squad gets selected, if his situation about coming back to Australia is any clearer.”
Speculation about a return heated up in May when Skelton’s club, Saracens, flagged a potential return. But discussions either stalled or were put on hold while Australia finished its Rugby Championship campaign.
The 2.03m former Waratah has played 18 Tests, leaving him well short of the 60-Test threshold for overseas eligibility.
