This is either a bold gamble by Eddie Jones – or merely a holding position. England’s World Cup squad has such an abundance of rookies, but there may yet be changes before departure to Tokyo.

In fact, changes are highly likely. The deadline to formally submit a list of 31 names to World Rugby is September 8. Jones has time to alter his plans. 

There is no imperative to close the door on those recovering from injury such as Brad Shields, or even Dylan Hartley.
